Lynn’s Story

When Lynn Gillett came into ResCare Community Living’s program,
she did not do her own laundry, clean her own home, cook for herself very much, or take medications as prescribed without help. She was feeling hopeless and out of control of her life. Lynn’s journey with ResCare began with getting to know her and earning her trust, empowering her to accomplish everything she wanted, and being there for her every step of the way. “ResCare built trust by listening to Lynn and respecting [her] opinions and concerns,” wrote Cathy Gillet, Lynn’s mother.

ResCare helped Lynn make small achievable goals and celebrated succuss each step of the way. She had all the desire and drive to accomplish great things but needed help getting there. She went from having staff for 8-10 hours per day and made progress toward independence, so she now only needs assistance from staff about 6-8 hours per week. “I have gone from a level 4 to a level 1a, which means I have less care and more freedom to be on my own,” shared Lynn.

“This experience has allowed Lynn to grow into a confident and responsible adult woman,” wrote Cathy.

Lynn owns her own car, is active in the community, and is a very bright friendly person. She continues to work on her goals and is currently working to find a different home and get a job. “My accomplishments are due to [Director of Residential Services] Jessica Moe and ResCare staff,” shared Lynn. “Jessica listens to me and treats me as an equal and I can trust her to support me. The staff helps to motivate me and helps me succeed at my goals.”

In Lynn’s free time, she now belongs to an advocacy group with the Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA), People First, and DDA Ombudsman. She also spends time volunteering at Peer Spokane.

“I am mentally stable and no longer need counseling services,” wrote Lynn. She advocates for herself and others, makes positive decisions and is working on her career goal of becoming a Peer Recovery Coach.

There are exciting times still ahead for Lynn, and the possibilities are endless. “I am excited to see her future accomplishments,” shared Cathy.
