Caleb’s Story

January 13, 2025 Filed under: Uncategorized

As Caleb Beighley will tell you, he grew up with ResCare and he has come a long way. Caleb began his relationship with the Greencastle operation as a youth. Through the years, he moved into a ResCare group home in Terre Haute in 2005 and then in Indianapolis in 2012. Caleb will be the first to tell you his path was not always smooth and he kept his staff busy. Along the way, though, he learned and grew as a person.

When he moved to the Indianapolis waiver program in 2014, Caleb began to recognize that he was maturing and that he wanted to do more than create drama like some of his peers. He began to really focus on one of his main interests: electronics. Since then, Caleb has learned a great deal about computers and electronics overall.

Caleb uses this knowledge to build and repair computers, tablets, and phones using whatever parts he has available. On occasions, he has been able to use this as a source of income. His talents now have extended into anything electrical. He repairs lamps, fans, and other small appliances. Caleb loves to take apart things that don’t work and make them functional again.

Caleb’s path toward independence has also included taking more responsibility for his own health and safety, including self-administering his meds. He reviewed the procedures and practiced his med administration. Caleb reached the point that he was ready to be observed and signed off by a nurse in 2021. He has continued to expand this knowledge through his development and completion of forms to track his health and safety status and progress. He started on this leg of his path in 2014 with making templates for forms and has progressed to independently completing a variety of forms each month that provide information on his status. This ranges from completing record of visit forms from appointments to monthly summaries on his progress. Caleb shares this information with his team and the team is then able to follow up as needed. It’s a win/win for everyone.

Caleb recognizes that to be successful, he does best living by himself. He has his own apartment that he takes care of. He is especially proud of how well he scores on the various audits that are completed at his home. He advocates for his needs, has formed relationships with neighbors and property management staff, and has become friends with the maintenance staff. This friendship has extended to Caleb going to dinner with him and his wife as well as going to the friend’s home. Caleb enjoys the companionship as they hang out in the friend’s garage/man cave and talk tools and electronics.

In 2024, Caleb was asked by the ResCare Human Rights Commission (HRC) chairman to join the Indianapolis HRC. He met with the Chairman to learn what being on the committee involved and what was expected. Caleb was excited to join and has taken the responsibility very seriously. He has created tracking forms that he uses for giving HRC approval and then provides them to the Chairman. If he has questions, he contacts the Chairman. Caleb prides himself on the professionalism and timeliness of his approvals. He has shared that those calling for approvals have complimented him on his responsiveness. About his participation on the HRC, Caleb shared with his team that, “This is like a big dream. I love helping and advocating for the clients.”

When Caleb recently celebrated his birthday, he noted that it will be 20 years since he started at that first ResCare group home in Terre Haute. As he is happy to share, he has made continuous progress since then and is proud of how far he has come. Those who have been a part of Caleb’s journey share in that pride and are looking forward to his next achievements.
