Robert C.’s Story

August 18, 2025 Filed under: Uncategorized

Robert Chotiner became a member of ResCare’s community care program in Ocean View, NJ, in January 1997. Now, more than 25 years after leaving the North Princeton Developmental Center, Robert is an example of someone who has truly become an integral part of his community – thriving and enjoying life.

Robert’s biggest champion is his mother, who worked diligently to support Robert’s successful transition to community living all those years ago and remains a steadfast presence in his life. Robert says that one of the things that makes him happiest in life is when he gets to spend in the community and with his family.

Over the years, Robert has grown to become a very involved member of both his community and household. One of Robert’s greatest attributes is his attention to details and ability to stay organized. He likes to keep a solid routine and is not shy about helping his housemates stick to their routines as well! The staff at Robert’s group home are impressed with his willingness to help others and approach life with a smile. In time, Robert has also developed as a social person, becoming much more talkative and sharing his fun experiences volunteering at a local farm, Able Acres.

Robert loves being outdoors, doing farm work, and interacting with the animals and nature. At home, he also loves to putter in the yard, raking leaves and decorating the outdoor area of his home for the holidays. In addition to his outdoor activities, Robert is a big sports fan. He enjoys watching baseball, football, basketball, and hockey. He keeps active by going on outings in the community, shopping, bowling, going to restaurants, Phillies baseball games, to movies, and visiting the local barber shop. He is also very active each summer with an annual trip via “Special Vacations” to a dude ranch and summer camp. He enjoys playing video games, especially sports-themed games!

In recent years since the pandemic, Robert expressed an interest in gardening and doing more outdoor activities. His staff were very supportive of his new hobby and provided him with an assortment of garden supplies, flowers, and plants that he has continued to care for. This year, Robert is looking forward to expanding his gardening by starting a backyard garden box and planting an assortment of vegetables.

Robert has truly blossomed while living in the community and at ResCare. He can be himself, enjoy his life, and continue to become as independent as possible. We are so proud of Robert!
