Vernon Nelson – Georgia Direct Support Professional of the Year
Vernon supports and assists individuals in meeting their goals daily. He attends the annual individual support plan meeting with the residential manager to familiarize himself with the individual’s goals to ensure he can meet them where they are.
Vernon takes the individuals he cares for shopping and enjoyable weekend activities. He involves the individuals he supports in preparing holiday meals to foster a sense of community and festive spirit.
Recently, the group home has been short-staffed. Vernon picks up extra shifts to ensure the group home is covered and arrives early to help transport individuals to and from the day program. He assists the residential manager in training the new staff, always makes sure they feel comfortable and makes himself available for questions concerning the home.
Vernon has developed a trusting relationship with the individuals he serves and his peers. They trust him and look forward to him coming to work every day. He provides a sense of calm and peace in the home, which results in the same behaviors for the individuals who reside there.
